Key Ingredients

See the recipe card for a full list of ingredients and quantities.
- Lucky Charms Cereal: The star of the recipe, adding crunch and fun colorful marshmallows. You can use regular name brand, or generic. They both work fine.
- Marshmallows: Mini marshmallows melt down a littler easier, but you can also use regular size (or even jumbo, if that is what you have on hand).
- Butter: Salted butter helps balance the sweetness, but you can use unsalted butter as well. Just add a tiny pinch of salt to the marshmallows when melting down.
How to Make
Similar to fruity pebbles treats or cornflake candy, these are so simple to make! Seriously, they take less than 15 minutes of active time. So easy!

- Cook Butter and Marshmallows: In a large saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. Once melted, add the marshmallows and continue cooking, making sure to stir continuously for about 3-5 minutes until the mixture is thin, smooth, and the butter has completely incorporated into the melted marshmallows.

- Add to Cereal: Once melted, immediately add to the Lucky Charms. If your saucepan is big enough to fit the cereal, you can add it straight to the pan. If not, pour it over a large bowl of the Lucky Charms cereal.

- Mix Together: Gently mix together until the cereal is covered with the marshmallow mix. Be sure to work quickly as the marshmallow mixture will start to set as it cools, and can make the treats hard to work with.

- Add to Prepared Baking Pan: Once mixed, add to a baking pan lined with parchment paper, and lightly press it into an even layer using a spatula or your hands. Do not pack it down tightly. If needed, add a bit of non-stick cooking spray or butter to the spatula or your hands so the marshmallow treats don’t stick.

- Let Set and Enjoy: If desired, add extra Lucky Charms marshmallows to the top, gently pressing in so they stick. Then, let the marshmallow bars set for at least two hours at room temperature. When ready to serve, slice up and enjoy!
Pro Tips:
- Work quickly. Once the marshmallow mixture is melted, stir in the cereal right away and transfer it to the pan before it cools, as the mixture firms up fast and can be difficult to spread.
- Microwave option: Melt the butter and marshmallows in a microwave-safe bowl for 1 minute, then heat and stir in 15-second intervals until smooth.
- Don't overmix the cereal. Fold the Lucky Charms in gently and stop once coated to keep the cereal from breaking down.
- Press lightly into the pan. Use a spatula or buttered hands to gently press the mixture into the pan. Packing it down too firmly will make the treats dense and tough.
- Let them set at room temperature. Refrigerating can cause the treats to firm up too much. For the softest texture, let them set on the counter.
Fun Variations
- White Chocolate Drizzle: Drizzle melted white chocolate over the set cereal bars for a bakery-style finish.
- Extra Marshmallow Version: Stir in an additional cup of mini marshmallows after mixing in the cereal for extra gooey texture and color.
- St. Patrick's Day Marshmallow Treats: Add a few drops of green food coloring to the melted marshmallow mixture for a festive holiday twist.
- Lucky Charms Rice Krispie Treats: Swap half of the Lucky Charms cereal with Rice Krispies for a lighter texture while keeping the colorful marshmallows.
- Chocolate Chip Upgrade: Mix in white chocolate chips or mini chocolate chips with the cereal.
FAQ
Yes! Regular marshmallows work just fine. Use about 4 cups of large marshmallows and melt them completely before adding the cereal.
This recipe is for an 8×8 inch or 9×9 inch pan. Double the recipe for a 9×13 inch pan.
Lucky Charms marshmallows are usually found mixed into the cereal, but General Mills occasionally releases bags of "just the marshmallows" for a limited time. Availability varies, so it's best to search online or check major retailers to see if they're currently in stock. You can also find off-brand cereal marshmallow pieces online, including on Amazon, which work well for topping these marshmallow treats.
Storing & Making Ahead
- Room temperature storage: Store Lucky Charms treats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. This keeps them soft and chewy.
- Make-ahead friendly: These treats can be made up to 1 day in advance and stored at room temperature until ready to serve.
- Freezing instructions: Lucky Charms treats can be frozen for up to 2 months in an airtight container or freezer bag. Thaw at room temperature before serving; the texture may change slightly after freezing.

Notes
- Work Quickly! The main reason these won't turn out is that the marshmallow mixture gets too cool before the cereal has been mixed it and added to the pan.
- You can also melt the butter and marshmallows in the microwave by heating for 1 minute, then heating and stirring in 15 second intervals until melted.
- This recipe can be doubled for a 9 x 13 inch pan.
- For fun variations, melted white chocolate on top of the set cereal bars, or mix in an extra cup of mini marshmallows or white chocolate chips with the cereal. Yum! And, for St. Patrick's Day, add a few drops of green food coloring to the melted marshmallows. So fun!
- These will last up to three days in an airtight container at room temperature. You can also freeze the set treats for up to two months, but the texture might change a bit once frozen.
