A lot of these have been making the rounds on Instagram and Tiktok (hello viral pretzel spider webs!) because they are so simple and they come out so cute. Plus, who doesn’t love chocolate covered pretzels. Why you’ll love them:
- Easy: All of these have 5 to 10 minute prep time and use only 3-4 ingredients, making them a fun and easy homemade Halloween snack!
- Delicious: Pretzel and chocolate are a classic crowd pleasing combination that are sure to be a hit at your next halloween party. Plus, they make really fun homemade gifts!
- Kid Friendly: These are such a fun treat and perfect for making with the kids! They can decorate the spider webs and brooms sticks exactly how they want them, personalizing the pretzel treats to their taste!
Ingredients
- Pretzels: For the brooms sticks and spiderwebs you’ll need pretzel sticks. For the eye Rolo treats, you’ll need either mini pretzel twists or pretzel squares.
- Chocolate: You can use your favorite chocolate chips, including white chocolate chips, almond bark, dark chocolate, semi sweet, or milk chocolate. Candy Coating such as Ghirardelli or Almond Bark works too. You can also use colored candy melts for a fun chocolate variation. You can also color the white chocolate your desired color using candy colors, which is oil based food coloring.
- Candy Eyes and Sprinkles: For the Halloween Rolo pretzel treats you’ll need large candy eyes. These blood shot candy eyes are really fun too! And for the spooky webs and broomsticks you can use your favorite Halloween sprinkles, including fun ones like spiders, witch hats, and smaller candy eyes.
How to Make
The nice thing about these pretzel treats is that there is really no right or wrong way to shape them, decorate them, or enjoy them. That’s one of the many reason they are so fun to make with kids!
Pretzel Spider Webs
Prep Workspace: Place a piece of parchment paper, wax paper, or a silicone baking mat on a baking tray or table (if letting the chocolate dry at room temperature). This will help to easily remove the treats once the chocolate dries.
A baking tray helps if moving the Halloween pretzels to and from the refrigerator or separate drying area. If letting the chocolate dry at room temperature, you can place the parchment or wax paper directly on a table or counter.
Form Webs: Then, form the pretzels into the shape of a spider web. I’ve found it helps to start by dividing into 4, then adding more pretzel stick evenly around the web.
Add Chocolate and Spinkles: Melt the chocolate according to the instructions on the package. Then, using a pastry bag or ziplock bag with a small tip cut off, drizzle the chocolate on the pretzels. You can also drizzle the chocolate on the pretzels using a spoon.
While the chocolate is still melted, Immediately add your favorite Halloween sprinkles such as bugs, candy eyes, witch hats, or other toppings such as crushed nuts, candy, etc.
Let Dry and Enjoy: Let the spider webs dry completely and carefully remove from the parchment or wax paper. Enjoy!
Pretzel Witches Brooms
These Witch’s pretzel brooms are made in the same way as the spiderwebs:
Form Brooms: After prepping your workspace with parchment or wax paper, form the pretzels into the shape of a broomstick, with one or two sticks at the top and then fan more pretzel sticks out at the bottom.
Add Chocolate and Sprinkles: If you haven’t done so yet, melt the chocolate according to the instructions on the package.
Let Dry and Enjoy: Let the brooms dry completely and carefully remove from the parchment or wax paper. Enjoy!
Candy Eye Rolo Pretzels
These are similar to pecan Rolo pretzels, but they use candy eyes instead of pecans or nuts.
Prep: Preheat an oven to 350 ℉. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper, wax paper, or a silicone baking mat.
Add Pretzels and Rolos: Place the pretzel twists in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet. Place one unwrapped Rolo candy on top of each pretzel.
Bake: Carefully transfer the baking sheet to the pre-heated oven and bake for 3-5 minutes.
Add Eyes and Cool: Remove the baking sheet from the oven and immediately press the candy eye into the center of each melted Rolo pretzel. Let the chocolate firm up at room temperature or in the refrigerator. Enjoy!
Fun Variations
- Mummy Pretzels: You can use white chocolate pretzels, or dip pretzel twists into white chocolate or almond bark. Then, drizzle white chocolate over the pretzels similar to these chocolate covered strawberries and add candy eyes. Let dry and enjoy!
- Halloween Pretzel Rods: Drip large pretzel rods in chocolate and add extra chocolate and candy eyes. Let dry and enjoy!
- Flavored Halloween Pretzel Treats: why stop at just adding Halloween sprinkles?! You can add cut up pieces of candy, mini M&Ms, chopped Oreo cookies, shredded coconut, chopped nuts, or other fun toppings to the melted chocolate.
- Candy Corn Rolo Treats: Try adding pieces of candy corn instead of candy eyes to the Rolo treats. Super fun, and works for Thanksgiving too!
Tips and Tricks
- Line the Baking Pan: Line a baking sheet or workspace with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat. This makes it easy to remove the treats once they’ve set.
- Prepare Your Toppings in Advance: Have your sprinkles or any additional toppings such as nuts, candy, etc. ready to go before melting the chocolate. This ensures a quick and smooth assembly process without the chocolate hardening.
- Get the Desired Consistency: If using candy melts and the chocolate appears too thick, you can add vegetable shortening 1 tsp at a time until you get a slightly thinner dripping consistency.
- Adding Food Coloring: If using white chocolate and adding food coloring, make sure they are oil based rather than water based. Water based extracts and food coloring can cause the chocolate to seize up and get grainy.
FAQ
There are two reasons chocolate can seize up and get grainy. The first is it was overheated. You can combat this by making sure to follow the instructions exactly when melting your chocolate. If using a microwave heat on half power and use a double broiler if heating on the stovetop. Do not ever heat any type of chocolate or candy melts directly in a pan on a stovetop. It will always overheat and seize up.
The second reason is because liquid somehow got mixed in with the chocolate. Be sure your bowl and utensils are completely dry before adding and melting the chocolate. And, if adding flavors or food coloring make sure they are oil based.
Yes, but be sure to use candy colors, which are oil based food coloring. If you use regular water based food coloring or gel food coloring it will cause the chocolate to seize up and get grainy.
Yes you can technically freeze then, but the chocolate spider webs and witch broomsticks are very delicate, so be carefully if freezing.
