Crostini Definition
Crostini means little crust in Italian. They are small slices of bread, brushed with olive oil, and toasted or grilled.
Difference Between Crostini and Bruschetta
Crostini and Bruschetta are very similar! While they’re both brushed with olive oil and cooked the main difference is in the size and heartiness of the bread. Crostini are normally smaller and made from lighter breads like baguettes while Bruschetta is made from larger loaves and is often a heartier rustic bread. But, they are often used interchangeably.
Topping Ideas for Crostini
The variety of meats, cheeses, vegetables, and dip combinations of toppings you can put on crostini are pretty much endless! You can do slightly sweet like this blackberry goat cheese crostini or go savory like this roast beef and creamy horseradish sauce crostini. Here is a delicious fava bean dip with manchego cheese, yum!
How to Make Crostini
Making crostini is as easy as it sounds. Slice a baguette into slices about ½ inch thick. You can make them a little thicker or thinner depending on preference. I’ve used French, Italian, and sourdough baguettes and they’ve all been good. Ciabatta is also really tasty for crostini.
Lightly coat with olive oil or melted butter. You can add crushed garlic or other flavors to the olive oil or butter. For the sake of these crostini I’m keeping it simple and only lightly coating in olive oil.
Then, you bake at 375 for 10-12 minutes. You’ll want to check halfway through to make sure they’re browning evenly. Both sides should darken pretty evenly, but if not, flip them and bake the reminder of the time or until desired brownness.
Violia, let cool and load up with your crostini toppings or serve with meats, cheese, or dips. You can store these in an airtight container for 2-3 days.
